Our souls had dark sides too, we discovered up there. And black was the colour of death, I quickly remembered. We all knew what he was going to do. Even if he wasn’t one of the most trustworthy members of our informal group, he was still one of us; even if he wasn’t well-liked or anybody’s best friend, he was still one of us; even if we often ignored him, he was still one of us. He was one of the neighbourhood children and that entitled him to our support, protection, but most of all, to our secrets. So when we saw him following the path we shared with him as well, we knew where he was going; and we knew his plan too, as we all gathered whispering, waiting to see if he could do it.
